Papamoa Hills Regional Park, known by its Māori name Te Rae o Papamoa, is the local favourite for a leg-stretching walk with a serious payoff. These hills were settled and fortified for centuries: the summit and surrounding ridges hold the remains of several pā (fortified villages), and you can still pick out the defensive terraces and storage pits cut into the hilltop, a reminder that this was once a place of real strategic importance overlooking the coast.
The track climbs steadily through rolling sheep-and-cattle farmland to the trig at the top, where the view sweeps from Mauao and the long line of the coast all the way inland to the Kaimai Range, taking in the whole Western Bay of Plenty. It is a moderate climb of around an hour and a half return that rewards every step.
The park entrance is about a 20-minute drive from Coastal Cottage, towards Papamoa and just off the main route inland. Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy, especially after rain.
