At the very foot of Mauao sit the Mount Hot Pools, a long-running Tauranga institution where heated saltwater pools steam away beneath the mountain. The water is drawn from the sea and warmed, and generations of locals and visitors have come here to soak, especially after making the climb to the summit that towers directly above.

There are open communal pools for a relaxed family soak at a range of temperatures, plus private pools you can book by the half-hour for something quieter. It is the classic Tauranga pairing: walk the Mount, then ease the legs in the warm water afterwards.

The pools are about a 15-minute drive from Coastal Cottage, at the base of Mauao right beside Pilot Bay, which makes it easy to roll a climb, a swim and a soak into a single afternoon.
