The Matua Saltmarsh Reserve is, quite literally, Coastal Cottage's own backyard escape. A timber boardwalk winds out over a pocket of coastal saltmarsh and mangroves on the edge of Tauranga Harbour, just a short stroll from the front door, with no car required.
Saltmarsh and mangrove estuaries like this one are among the most productive ecosystems in the country, acting as nurseries for fish and feeding grounds for wading birds. As you walk the boardwalk you are likely to spot herons, kingfishers and other shorebirds working the mudflats, especially around the turn of the tide, all framed by views across the harbour.
Because it sits right on the doorstep in Matua, this is the easiest outing of them all, a flat, quiet, roughly five-minute walk from the cottage. At high tide and golden hour it is one of the loveliest places in the neighbourhood to slow down.
