Kaiate Falls, properly Te Rerekawau, is a series of waterfalls that tumble through a pocket of regenerating native bush in the Kaiate Falls Scenic Reserve, in the hills south-east of Tauranga. The stream steps down over a run of rock ledges, with the main falls dropping into a deep pool framed by ferns and forest.
A well-formed loop track of around 40 minutes to an hour takes you past the upper falls, down through the bush to viewpoints over the cascades, and on to the pools at the base. On warm days the swimming holes are a refreshing reward, though it pays to check the reserve's water-quality signage before you take a dip, as readings can change after heavy rain.
The reserve is about a 20-minute drive from Coastal Cottage, heading south-east of the city into the hills. The falls run hardest after rain, and the swimming is best in the warmth of summer.
