The Minden Lookout is one of those local secrets that delivers a postcard view for almost no effort. Perched high on the Minden hill above Te Puna, it is a simple roadside viewpoint, but the outlook it commands over the Western Bay of Plenty is hard to beat.
From the lookout the whole harbour spreads out below you, taking in Matua, the city, the long sweep of the coast and Mauao standing guard at the harbour mouth, with the open Pacific beyond. There is no walking involved: you pull up, take a few steps and the view is right there, which makes it a brilliant quick stop to fold into a wider Te Puna outing.
It is about a 15-minute drive from Coastal Cottage, up Minden Road from Te Puna. Locals know it best as a sunrise and sunset spot, when the low light sets the harbour alight, so take a coffee and time it for the golden hour.
