Karangahake Gorge carves a dramatic course between the Kaimai and Coromandel ranges, and it was once the beating heart of New Zealand's gold rush. From the 1870s through the early 20th century this was one of the richest goldfields in the country, and the gorge is still laced with the relics of that era: crumbling stamping batteries, mine shafts, tramways and tunnels cut straight through the rock above the Ohinemuri River.
Walking tracks weave along both sides of the river and across it on swing bridges. The famous Windows Walk threads along the old mine workings, with "windows" blasted through the cliff face looking dizzyingly down to the water, while a long, dead-straight disused rail tunnel makes an atmospheric finish (bring a torch). Pretty Owharoa Falls is a short detour away, and there is a cafe at the main car park to refuel.
The gorge is the longest drive of the regular outings, about 45 minutes from Coastal Cottage heading towards Waihi on State Highway 2. Allow a good half day to do the loop walks justice.
