The Elms is one of New Zealand's most significant heritage sites. The mission station on the Te Papa peninsula was established by the missionary Alfred Brown in 1838, and the surviving buildings, including the main house completed in 1847, the library and the little chapel, are among the oldest in the country. On the eve of the Battle of Gate Pā in 1864, British officers dined here the night before the engagement, tying the site directly to one of the defining events of the New Zealand Wars.

Today the house, chapel and outbuildings are preserved much as they were, and the story of early Tauranga, the missionaries and the turbulent years of the 1860s is told throughout. The mature heritage gardens are peaceful and free to wander, while guided tours and open days bring the interiors and their history to life.

It is about a 10-minute drive from Coastal Cottage, on the Te Papa peninsula close to the city centre, and makes a gentle, fascinating contrast to the Bay's beaches and bush.
