Tucked on the sheltered harbour side of Mauao, Pilot Bay takes its name from the maritime pilots who, for well over a century, have guided ships through the narrow Tauranga Harbour entrance from the pilot station here. It is the calm, gentle counterpart to the Mount's wild ocean beach on the far side of the isthmus.
The water is shallow, protected and almost always calm, which makes it a favourite for families with young children and for anyone who would rather float than fight the surf. A flat boardwalk runs the length of the foreshore beneath the pÅhutukawa, the bay is ideal for launching the cottage paddle board onto glassy water, and you can watch the pilot boats and yachts slip in and out of the harbour mouth.
It is about a 15-minute drive (roughly 14 kilometres) from Coastal Cottage, on the harbour side at the very base of Mauao. As the sun drops, Pilot Bay becomes one of the prettiest, and quietest, places in Tauranga to watch the light fade over the water.
